On Sunday we spent a good part of the day in Vlissingen, a town about 30 minutes away. We talked about building sandcastles on the beach and looking at the ships passing on their way to Antwerp. When we got downtown we heard music and saw hundreds of people enjoying the warm hazy weather. What a lovely atmosphere. For lunch we just bought a bag of bread and three different kinds of salads to spread on the bread. Jasper took a bite out of a sausage that was on display so we bought two of those as well. We realized later the sausages were uncooked!
We ate our sandwiches listening to a choir of fishermen singing old dutch fishermen songs. We sat behind the stage for the shade. The kids peaked at the singers through the curtain at the back. We did see the ships and sailboats, but we also discovered a water feature in one of the town squares. The kids jumped up and down and asked to please play in the water instead of going to the beach. It was so much fun. People of all ages were milling around enjoying the sun, rolling up their trouser-legs and wading in the cool clear water. Splashing, laughing and squealing when they slipped in the water unexpectedly. It might have been our last sunny summer day and it was well spent.
